Moving kits are special boxes that protect the contents of your home possessions when you move. Every room will have household items with specific packing requirements, and this is why the kits come in a variety of shapes and sizes. You just assess the number of rooms in your home and decide on the different box sizes best suited to protect those particular goods. Your mover will help you calculate the number of boxes that you will need. Moving kits include the following box options, although details may vary from supplier to supplier.
Medium Moving Boxes (18” x 14” x 12”): A general-purpose box supplied for shipping or storing books, ornaments and other collectibles, kitchen goods and other household items too. Medium moving boxes are flat packed in a protective frame box, which can then be used to pack paintings, mirrors and other big flat items.
Large Moving Boxes (20” x 20” x 15”): Supplied flat packed, these boxes are designed to carry clothes and bedding, and can be used for other bulky but not overly heavy items too.
Extra Large Moving Boxes (23” x 23” x 16”): These are used for shipping (or storing) larger household items such as comforters, blankets, clothes, lamps, pillows and any other large but light items - they are big, so remember to distribute the weight so that the box can be carried. They come flat packed, too.
Wardrobe Boxes (24” x 24” x 40”): Wardrobe boxes are double-strength and portable that are not only useful during the moving process but can be used to store winter and summer clothes. They also generally come with a sturdy metal hanger bar.
Kitchen Boxes (18” x 18” x 22”): Pack your kitchen contents in these, just as professional movers do. Remember to wrap your dishes and glassware in plenty of protective packing paper as well, and they will survive the move in these super-strong containers.
File Boxes (16” x 12.5” x 10”): Pack your home office in these and stay organized. Keep your paperwork, important documents, manuals, receipts and even coin collections in these special boxes. Each one comes with an attached lid that you simply fold and lock in place for a stress free move.
Frame Boxes (41” x 6” x 26.5”): Use these for shipping or storing large pictures, mirrors and any other large thin items. Supplied flat packed again.
Other important items making up a comprehensive moving kit should include packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, moving blankets, edging protectors, permanent marker pens and packing tape with dispenser. A cutting knife and a sharp pair of scissors will complete the set. You can also ask your mover to assist you in locating these materials -- some even offer them with their services.
Additional Tip: Check with your insurer to find out whether they have any specific clauses regarding the way your goods are packed, and who packs them too – or you could compromise your insurance cover.
