Moving Day Solutions: Your Step-by-Step Packing Plan

When moving, organizing your boxes and having a packing plan is key to the success of your move. Even better, establishing a packing plan is easy -- you just need a simple chronological guide and a few important tips:

Decide on what should go.
This can either be the easiest part of moving or the hardest but without getting rid of some items, you will be left with junk that never use - not to mention items that will increase your moving day expenses. Without even knowing it, we harbor a lot of junk - which over time turns into more junk. Assess the good from the bad and decide what should be tossed or donated, or even in some instances, can be sold. Consider the items of value and place them in a pile. If you have time, consider selling your old books, toys, clothes. Those that you can't sell or don't want to, take these items to your local Salvation Army or pass them along to friends or family members. Some items are better left in the trash can.

Pack your items.
Now that you know what should go and which ones should stay, it's time to pack those boxes. Consider specialty boxes such as kitchen boxes, wardrobe boxes and medium-sized moving boxes that are customizable to your items. When packing, do so like you would your groceries: heavier things first and lighter items on top. The empty spaces inside your large pieces of furniture – such as drawers and shelves – can be packed with smaller, odd-shaped items after they're loaded into the van. This is also a resourceful way to protect your fragile and breakable items.

As a general rule, pack last whatever you need to access quickly during your last days at the house, your stay at a hotel, or during travel, such as children's activities (which serve as welcome diversions on the road), items for your pets, and your camera to document your moving experience.

Items You Should Never Pack:

Legal documentation. Car titles, visas or passports, insurance policies and marriage certificates are the most difficult items to replace but also always the easiest to lose. Never pack them -- and to be on the safe side: make copies of them on a portable hard drive.

Valuables. Items like antiques and jewelry and other items of high sentimental or monetary value should not be packed away in boxes. Make sure you have a separate bag where you can pack and store your valuables - that is also nearby and secure.
