You have been searching rooms to rent and finally found one that you like. You have agreed to move in with you new roommates within the next two weeks, so now is the time to start packing your belongings. Before you start packing your whole life into boxes getting ready for the move, there are a few things you should have already gone over with your new roommate.
First of all, have you agreed on a furnished or unfurnished room? If unfurnished, this gives you some options in regards to the packing you can do. Do you already have furniture to bring over from your previous room, if so; you already have a good idea of how much room you have within your draws, under your bed etc… If you need to buy furniture for the room, you can decide on how large you need your dresser and bed to be to accommodate your stuff, as well as one that properly fits into your room.
If the room is already furnished, then you will need to gauge how much room you have within the room for your current things. Are there enough draws/closet space for your cloths and other things? If yes, that is great, but if not, you will need to get rid of some items that no longer fit into your new space. In these situations, most people are selling them off to friends so they won’t be a total lose.
The one thing you can ask your new roommate before you get rid of your valuables is if they have any extra space in the household for storage. You will more likely find the answer to be yes when renting a room in a house, where there is typically spare basement or attic space the renter will let you use.
To ease your moving out/moving in process, figure out how much space you have so you know what you can bring along, and what needs to be left behind. Moving is stressful enough as it is, no need to make it worse by not planning in advance.
