Properly packing china is an important step when planning a move. Improperly packed china (and other valuables) can become damage during the moving process. Luckily, by utilizing a few important steps in protecting expensive china can help insure there is no damage to important possessions. Following these simple guidelines will save an enormous amount of time (and money) upon arrival to the new home. Instead of rummaging through unmarked boxes, straining back muscles and mourning the shattered remains of Grandmother's fine china, taking the time to pack in the proper way will make it possible to unpack efficiently and enjoy the milestone occasion.
What You Will Need
To insure secure packing, bubble wrap, packing tape, newspapers, packing peanuts and cardboard boxes may all be necessary supplies. While packing, you will undoubtedly be looking for cushioning material for your valuables. And while newspaper is an inexpensive and acceptable choice, be certain that newsprint is not rubbing off on fabrics, linens or china. It is a good idea to wrap anything made of these materials in plastic before placing them in the box. Moreover, when using newspaper to package your belongings, washing the hands frequently will help to assure newsprint does not rub off on expensive belongings during packing.
Packing Glasses and Cups:
Be sure to individually wrap each glass in bubble wrap and tape it in place. Make sure that every area of the glass is covered, and stuff the bubble wrap inside the glass. Next, place a layer of bubble wrap in the bottom of a cardboard box to help cushion the china. Place your glasses upright (as if placing them on a table) in the box. Then, pack as many glasses as can comfortably fit on the bottom row. Place a layer of cardboard over the glasses along with extra bubble wrap on the top and the bottom. Finally, make another layer of individually wrapped glasses followed by more bubble wrap. Close the box and secure it with packing tape. Be certain to mark boxes appropriately.
Packing Plates and Dishes:
Wrapping fine plates and dishes is similar to packing glasses and cup. Start by wrapping each plate in newspaper. Then, layer the plates on top of each other until the box is comfortably filled. Next, add bubble wrap and packing peanuts to the box to fill in the gaps between the plates and the sides of the boxes. Make sure they are secure and are not going to slide around during the move. Close the box and secure it with packing tape.
Keeping Everything Secure:
Label the box "Fragile: China" and "This side up." Be sure to inform the movers which boxes contain the important, and easily damaged possessions; and to be extra careful with these items when they are transported to and from the truck. In addition, it is wise to place the boxes containing the china in a secure section of the moving truck that will remain steadiest.
